One weekend ago, I stopped by for an unexpected visit to Vanessa and Amy at the infamous Catalog Gallery, a brick-and-mortar art gallery that opened on October 8th in the heart of Vancouver’s Gastown district. The workspace behind the public view was as interesting and piquant to the eye, as the art hanging on the walls and conversational murmurs in the cool shaded glare of a hot, summer sunshine afternoon.
Catalogs mandate is to program theme-driven shows that highlight Vancouver’s creative community and place place it firmly in the global conversation of art. We will achieve this by pairing artists with their international contemporaries though a series of group and solo exhibitions.
With a underlying focus on showing artists that span the grey-areas between traditional mediums, we hope to create a multi dimensional and positive addition to the flourishing West Coast art scene.
The space itself is a beautiful build by Brodie Kitchen (tincanstudio.org), Clint Kitchen and Robert Squire. The humble 16ft (height) x 20ft (depth) x 20ft (width) of display space are well lit, with enough power to drive multimedia shows and installations in many formations. (#C)
