Design and Nerds in a Hive

The diversity of the group enriches the design process and propels discussion far beyond the prescribed parameters of a project.

Just a quick update to announce that I attended a design-thinking related event last night at The Hive, specifically the Vancouver Design Nerds mashup jam related to Emily Carr’s recent Design Thinking ‘unconference: a two-day immersion in ideas, projects and practice exploring the craft of Design Thinking.

The Vancouver Design Nerds are a network of collaborating designers and artists who share a desire to engage design opportunities with a spirit of creative play and to challenge the normative environment of the city.

The diversity of the group enriches the design process and propels discussion far beyond the prescribed parameters of a project, revealing opportunities and unanticipated, often surprising results. (VDN)

Delicious glasses of pale ale lager and vegetarian pizzas were consumed, amidst ideas of renewable creativity for teflon: a strange, warp loom-like material that descended from the roofing structure of Canada Place. Much of the discussions focused on architectural structures, sculptures in art spaces, urban gardening and other such notions.
