At their Men’s D&G Spring 2012 show in Milan, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana presented patterns usually reserved for women’s scarves on men’s shorts, trousers, sweaters–you name it. Versace did it too with a smart pair of scarf-print trousers. The look wasn’t successful in every iteration (I’m sorry, there is just nothing right about billowing, drop crotch scarf-print flood pants on a man, woman, or child), but the duo managed to make the soft feminine patterns feel soft and masculine at the same time. Just the kind of man we like.

2. BALANCING BRIGHTS WITH NEUTRALS

Color has been a big story at the Spring 2012 Men’s shows in Milan with bright suits, bold graphic prints, and colorblock shoes grabbing the eye. Donatella Versace kept it popping with her menswear too, pairing dove greys and other neutral basics with pops of candy color. Love the balance!

3. BLINGING BLAZERS

Designers have trotted out sequins and otherwise shining sports coats over the past few seasons, but this time they seemed to have gotten the balance between gawdy and glam just right. I’m digging John Richmond’s (l) bling-patterned black blazer and discotastic dinner jacket at the Gucci (r) and Alexander McQueen shows.

4. OVERSIZED BLAZERS

And while we’re on the topic of blazers, there was many a slouchy oversized cut on the runways in Milan at the Spring 2012 Menswear shows. When it comes to suiting, I usually, I prefer a slimmer European cut on a man, but I love the post-modern Charlie Chaplin on holiday vibe these looks by Umit Benan evoke.
5. COLORBLOCK OXFORD SNEAKERS

From jade-tinted round-framed sunnies to floppy newsboy caps, there were some cool accessories on display at Prada‘s Spring 2012 men’s show, specifically, the colorblock oxford sneakers. There were printed incarnations too!

5. OPTICAL ILLUSIONS

Even as a regular ole herringbone suit, this Neil Barrett set is sharp, but when the herringbone pattern on the trousers breaks away into a deconstructed pattern, that’s when it enters Must Land.
