Styling Tip: Mix Leather and Denim

via Styling Tip: Mix Leather and Denim.

  • By juxtaposing your tried-and-true denim jacket with super luxe pieces, you’re creating a diversified textural effect. Jean material exudes a casual vibe, while leather maintains a classic cool look, no matter what. It’s an easy way of striking an effortless balance between dressed up and not trying too hard.
  • How many ways can you style this duo? Let us count the ways. From a leather-and-khaki trench coat to a jean jacket-leather sheath combo, we love that there’s flexibility in pairing the two materials together. For a totally on-point Spring look, pair a chambray button-up with a leather pleated skirt. It’s ladylike, edgy, and can be worn from day-to-night.
  • To ensure you’re ready for whatever Spring temps are thrown your way, layer your leather and denim accordingly. A leather jacket will add just the right amount of chic factor to a jean ensemble on chillier days, but once the warmer weather hits, a sweet leather pencil skirt and denim topper will provide the perfect climate-friendly ensemble.

Plus Sizes
The most flattering plus-size styles have a few elements in common: A higher rise, a thick waistband, and a slimming dark rinse. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with color! Opt for saturated mid-tone to deep hues, and keep the rest of your look mostly neutral.

petite

Petites
A few years ago, petite gals were spending a small fortune on tailoring their jeans — now, most mass e-commerce sites have wised up and altered inseams, rises, and knee positioning to accomodate those with slighter statures. Experiment with pastel denim for spring, and choose skinny styles that are hemmed at the ankle or just below to lengthen your legs.

From left: Gap 1969 Lightweight Always Skinny Cropped Jeans, $69.95, available at Gap; Old Navy The Flirt Boot-Cut Jeans, $29.50, available at Old Navy; Ann Taylor Petite Denim Zipper Leggings, $98, available at Ann Taylor.

tall

Tall Frames
Here’s the thing about legs that go for days — it’s hard to find pants that can keep up. But some of our favorite retailers — J.Crew, Gap, Old Navy, and The Limited, for starters — stock tall sizes through their online stores. Slim, bootcut, and trouser silhouettes are most flattering on tall frames; look for hems to hit either right at your ankle or about an inch above the base of your heel.

From left: The Limited 678 Flare Trouser Jean, $69.90, available at The Limited; New York & Company Bright Denim Skinny Jean, $59.95, available at New York & Company; J.Crew Tall Bootcut Jean, $108, available at J.Crew.

J.Crew March Catalog 2012 Pictures

J.Crew just released its March catalog, shot in the picturesque mountains of Uruguay, supplying us with cute color combo inspiration and covetable Spring separates. As expected, the looks are perfectly styled, showcasing green sequined skirts with purple cotton shirts, bright yellow shorts with cobalt-blue toppers, and our favorite look, silk printed trousers paired with an effortless denim button-up. Accessories featured an array of two-tone leather satchels and cute woven sandals, and if a warm vacation is set in your future, check out J.Crew’s collection of sweet vintage-inspired swimwear. Read below for styling tips we culled from the collection, then peruse the slideshow to see the rest of the lookbook.

Spring styling tips:

  • Do invest in a pair pf printed trousers. Dress it up with heels and a silk blouse for an evening out, or downplay the print with a white tee and oxfords for a more casual effect.
  • Combine solid bright separates together, like a green skirt with an orange shirt, to create a simple yet standout Spring look.
  • We love feminine pencil skirts. Style it up with a denim button-up shirt and platform sandals for a chic office-appropriate ensemble.

Femininity
We’re looking forward to bringing out our inner girl this spring, especially when it comes to feminine silhouettes and lace. Make sure your hair is sweetly coiffed to match, and don’t forget a pair of flirt-ready shoes.

Spring Pastels
After a long winter swaddled in dark, heavy coats, it will be impossible to wait for light fabrics in spirit-lifting pastels. Spring is never shy on this color scheme, but in 2012 we’re particularly ready for some fresh color-blocking.

The Drop Waist
We’re feeling the Gatsby-esque vibe of spring’s drop-waist dresses. If they’re a little too intense for you, try a modernized version. Both are just as fun, and just as on-trend.

Neutrals
The spring ’12 runways showed us plenty of chic, sharp neutrals, and we’ll be ready to add them all to both our work and play wardrobes.
