Pecha Kucha Night, a viral event originated “as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.” Originated in Tokyo, the phrase has a different pronunciation and literally translates to “the sound of conversation.”

A few of the speakers were already familiar (Graeme Berglund The Cheaper Show, Bob Kronbauer Vancouver Is Awesome), but the highlight were the speeches on eco-sustainability within machinery technology, such as recycling old cogs and large bolts to create furniture, the local fashion stream, mathematical equations integrated into real-life philosophy, and restorations of downtown historical landmarks. I also jotted notes during the event than you can view on flickr

Worksongs reminds me of the days when I used to sneak into old highschools after hours and pretend to be an ex-graduate. I would stare at the real grad class pictures in awe and peek into abandoned lockers with the sound of running feet and children voices always nearby.

Net Tuesdays, a meeting where “social media and web innovators come together with social change makers and nonprofits to mix, swap stories and ideas, and build new relationships.” The latest evening I attended was about widgets: small tiny applications that are utilized as mini webpages/apps in other websites.

Day 1 - Volunteering
Arrived early in the morning and met the other volunteers (Cameron Cavers & Jim DeLaHunt), also reunited with Maxine and John from last year’s conference
We spent the first half of the morning setting people up with name badges and a complimentary swag bag from BAGGU.

Day 2 - Sessions
During the first two days everyone scattered like sheep to different speakers and sessions; attentive to speeches and slides presentations, there were also new questions to query and funny quotes and of course, iphones to jot down notes or upload photos. You can view the notes here.

A couple sessions I attended: Five Essential Composition Tools for Web Typography by Kimberly Elam, What Makes a Design Seem Intuitive? by Jared Spool, Information Visualization as a Medium by Eric Rodenbeck, Where’s Your Web At? Designing for the Web Beyond the Desktop by John Allsopp & Dave Shea, Return of the King of Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman, Innovation is Overrated by Indi Young, Movement by Matt Webb
I would like to say “thank you” again to the organizers (Maxine, John, Dave, Derek) for allowing me to volunteer at the conference workshops and the judges who voted for my snowboard design
